Oligohydramnios refers to the situation where there is reduced amniotic fluid volume for a given gestational age. It can occur due to premature rupture of the membranes where amniotic fluid has drained out vaginally. Occasionally it occurs because the fetus has not developed kidneys so amniotic fluid is not being produced. Ultrasound is the best test for the evaluation of oligohydramnios.
