Shaving, Grooming and Appearance of Your Vulva

Shaving, Grooming and Appearance of Your Vulva

At Ultrasound Care, we understand that preparing for an ultrasound can bring up questions or even concerns about personal grooming, your menstrual cycle, or the appearance of your body. Rest assured, our team of highly qualified obstetricians and gynaecologists has extensive experience providing compassionate care to women of all ages and backgrounds. Here’s what you need to know about common concerns before your appointment.

Do I Need to Shave My Pubic Hair or Legs?

The short answer: no.

How you style your pubic hair—or whether you style it at all—is entirely your choice and doesn’t affect your ultrasound. Over the years, we’ve cared for thousands of women and seen every possible variation, from a natural, luxuriant bush to intricate designs, and everything in between. A little hair has never interfered with a scan or examination.

If you’re worried about leg hair, don’t be! We’re focused on your health, not aesthetics. Your comfort and care are our priority, so please don’t feel the need to groom or shave specifically for us.

Does It Matter If I’m Bleeding?

In most cases, bleeding does not prevent us from performing an ultrasound. If you’re pregnant and experiencing bleeding, an ultrasound is often critical to determine the cause. For gynaecological scans, light bleeding typically poses no issue. In fact, a transvaginal ultrasound, which provides higher-resolution images, is often the preferred approach and can be performed safely during light bleeding.

However, if you are experiencing a heavier flow, it could obscure certain details, especially if we’re examining the uterine lining (endometrium) for abnormalities like polyps. In these cases, we may suggest rescheduling the scan for a different stage in your cycle or performing a sonohysterogram, a procedure that uses saline to clear blood for a clearer view of the uterus. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask—we’re here to guide you.

Will You Be Shocked by the Sight of My Vulva?

Absolutely not.

We’ve seen it all: piercings, tattoos, labia of all shapes and sizes, and even bedazzled designs. We’ve cared for women who’ve undergone surgeries, experienced female genital mutilation, or worried about their anatomy. Rest assured, your body is uniquely yours, and there’s nothing to feel self-conscious about.

Our focus is on your health, not how you look. Whether your anatomy resembles a rosebud, peony, or orchid, we are here to provide professional, empathetic care without judgment.
